Are we seeking gifts instead of the Giver, comfort rather than the Comforter, or blessings in place of the One Who blesses?
It’s easy to do because His gifts, His comfort, and His blessings are so incredible. But we must take care that these aren’t our main focus. We are to set our minds on things above, on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not on this world or its comforts (Colossians 3:2). When we’re tempted to set our attention on what we get from God rather than on God Himself, we’re being tempted by a spirit of anti-Christ. The word anti can mean against but it can also mean in place of. In this sense, anything we pursue instead of Him is anti-Christ. Perhaps the saddest example is when we, the New Covenant saints, center our attention on God’s grace but subtly fail to exalt the Person of Grace, the Lord Jesus Christ (Titus 2:11-12), who alone teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live in a sober, righteous, and godly manner.
