Jesus promised that, if we abide in Him, we’ll bear much fruit. Our Savior mentioned abiding six times in just seven verses (John 15:4-10), so we need understand what He is saying.
Through the finished work of Lord Jesus, God joins with us in an established permanent relationship – He abides in us, and we abide in Him. So, when Jesus calls us to abide, He is simply encouraging us to not look for life apart from Him.
Abiding is like breathing. We don’t ask ourselves whether we’re breathing, we breathe without even thinking about it. That is, until we foolishly choose to hold our breath. Then we quickly learn that not breathing is a most unnatural thing for us to do, because it cuts us off from what we need most – life.
