Today, I want to talk about what I believe is the supreme attribute of God. When you hear the phrase “the attributes of God,” I believe that you will instantly be thinking of the fact that He’s omnipotent, that He’s all-powerful and can do anything. Or maybe that He’s omniscient, that He knows all things, or omnipresent, that He’s everywhere at all times. All of those aspects of who God is can be greatly encouraging because they teach us that we are never alone. They show us that He is up to the demand when we are overwhelmed in life, and that He knows what we’re going through, and that He cares. But the attribute I want to talk about is really what I believe to be the supreme attribute of God.
”For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself.
John 5:26(NASB)
It says God has life in Himself. Life is not something that God has. Life is something God is.
He is life, and that’s why I say it’s the supreme attribute. Because He is life, He is all those other attributes. Now, if we understand this, it’s really going to ruin a lot of sermons that we’ve heard by pastors who will tell you, “God needs you to serve Him. God needs you to write a check and support the ministry. God needs you to serve and obey Him.”
No, no, God doesn’t need anyone or anything. God is so full and complete and perfect in Himself. My friends, He doesn’t have a bad day if you mess up. God is not the biggest codependent in the universe. The truth is He doesn’t need anyone or anything. The glory is that He invites you and me to participate with Him in His kingdom work. It is a privilege, not bondage, and it is a choice.
You and I have the incredible privilege by invitation from God to put our faith in Him and thereby receive Him for all that He is to us, in us, and through us to others. We have been invited to experience God and express God, to know Him, His love, His grace and mercy, and then to give His love and grace and mercy to others. Oh, my goodness, that causes me to be stunned, and being stunned is a really good thing, my friends.
Only stunned people really know how to worship.
I pray you’ll worship today, stunned that He is expressing His own life through your life to a world that desperately needs Him. Wow. Go be who you are and stand tall and strong in this world in Jesus’ name. Bless you.
